What Is Performing Arts Medicine?
Performing Arts Medicine (PAM) is a field of medicine devoted to the distinct care needs and rehabilitation of performing artists. Creating artistic movement that appears effortless and fluid from the stage requires countless hours of strenuous training and dedication to master. A healthy balance of flexibility, strength, joint stability and endurance is required for a performer to reach his or her own maximum potential. It is vital that performing artists have a working knowledge of their bodies--including anatomy, biomechanics, and proper technique--in order to address the cause of their injuries, not just treat the symptoms.
Dance, as an art form, requires a significant amount of repetitive movements (such as relevés, pliés, developpés, etc.), which can put dancers at risk for specific overuse injuries. Early intervention and injury prevention techniques can greatly reduce the severity and duration of performance injuries. Our goal at Body Dynamix PT is to shorten the duration of injuries and to equip dancers with the tools they need to prevent those injuries from becoming chronic or recurring. Injuries can occur at any age and skill level. Thus, an individualized plan of care is the most effective way to return to doing what you love, DANCE!
